چکیده

This Master’s Thesis compares two computational fluid dynamics solvers: the commercial solver ANSYS CFX and the open source code OpenFOAM. Simple benchmark cases with compressible and incompressible flows are tested and compared. Thereafter the more complex process of quenching in coal gasification is simulated. This thesis work describes the simulation of a part of the coal gasification process, namely the water gas shift reaction or the quenching process. The quenching process involves simulation of a multicomponent, multiphase reactive flow system. This thesis uses the EulerianLagrangian approach to simulate the quenching process. It turns out that ANSYS CFX convinces in the first place with its robustness, especially when dealing with steady state problem configurations. However OpenFOAM shows a much better performance when dealing with strongly transient processes.

Numerical Modelling for Process Investigation of a Single Coal Particle Combustion and Gasification

Combustion and Gasification are commercial processes of coal utilization, and therefore continuous improvement is needed for these applications. The difference between these processes is the reaction mechanism, in the case of combustion the reaction products are CO2 and H2O, whereas in the case of gasification the products are CO, H2 and CH4. In order to investigate these processes further, a s...

The Effect of Air Fuel Ratio and Temperature on Syngas Composition and Calorific Value Produced from Downdraft Gasifier of Rubber Wood-Coal Mixture

Rubber wood (Ficus elastica) is one the biomass waste that can be used as raw material for a gasification process and has a calorific value of 4,069 cal/gram. Gasification is a process to convert a solid fuel to syngas (CO, CH4, and H2) through a combustion process using limited air between 20% to 40% of air stoichiometry. Depending on the direction of airflow, the gasifiers are classified as u...

Superstructure of Cogeneration of Power, Heating, Cooling and Liquid Fuels Using Gasification of Feedstock with Primary Material of Coal for Employing in LNG Process

Using absorption refrigeration cycles instead of vapor compression refrigeration cycles can drastically decrease energy consumption. In these systems, high level of energy consumption is reduced due to the partially elimination of vapor compression refrigeration systems. On the other hand, utilization of waste heat of the plant, which is a very good opportunity for energy saving,  is possible. ...

Clean Hydrogen Energy and Electric Power Production with CO2 Capturing by Using Coal Gasification

Clean hydrogen is the major energy carrier for power production. The conversion of CO to CO2 and zero emission during hydrogen energy production causes high capital cost. It is a matter of prestige to optimize the process in order to make zero emission and cost effective production of clean hydrogen energy and electric power. In this era, coal gasification is th...

Evaluation of Biomass Introduction Methods in Coal Co-Gasification

Heightened concerns over the amount of carbon emitted from coal-related processes are generating shifts to the application of biomass. In co-gasification, where coal is gasified along with biomass, the biomass may be fed together with coal (cofeeding) or an independent biomass gasifier needs to be integrated with the coal gasifier. The main aim of this work is to evaluate the biomass introducti...
